Cycle Training in the Primary Curriculum
Bikeability Cycle Training can provide an active and enjoyable contribution to
fulfilling the primary curriculum. Bikeability uses a logic based approach and
draws on geography, maths, science and citizenship to teach a full
knowledge of riding bikes off-road (level 1 Bikeability) in years 1 to 4, in
preparation for on-road bikeability training in year 5 and above, as well as
helping fulfill the requirements for 5 hours of activity per week.
Additionally, Bikeability uses an interactive teaching approach which suits all
learning styles - a rich mix of visual, auditory and kinaesthetic learning, while
constantly eliciting answers from the pupils to ensure full engagement from
all trainees. By using positive reinforcement throughout the sessions,
everyone comes away with a feeling of success, and is issued with a
certificate to show what they have achieved during the session. It is very
rare for pupils to be excluded from the group, as a strong sense of
facilitation and encouragement to keep all pupils engaged and in a positive
frame of mind is fostered by Bikeability Instructors.
Bikeability Instructors find that many pupils who struggle in their more
constrained and sometimes pressurised classroom environments, will
shine and flourish while doing Bikeability. The Instructors will give praise to
increase confidence in under-achieving children, as well as offering a new
skill and activity interest to all pupils. The development of an independence
in travel mode (riding along with parents on their way to school can speed
up the journey for parents) has also benefitted many school environments
and raised the fitness and alertness of pupils in other school activities.
